Mac OS X Lion is definitely a worthy upgrade for all Intel Mac users. Featuring several interface enhancements and useful new features across all the core apps, Mac OS X Lion is an excellent update for the price. When Apple showed off Mac OS X Lion at the Worldwide Developers Conference keynote speech earlier this year, it was clear the company had paid attention to its successes with the popular iOS devices, and was now beginning to include successful iOS features in its flagship OS. Also, with Apple laptops and tablets now far outpacing desktop sales, Apple has moved from a primarily desktop computer company to embrace mobile computing. This release of Mac OS X seems to be a reflection of Apple’s successes in those categories. With this eighth major release of the big-cat OS, Apple is adding more than 250 features. Some are big interface changes, whereas others are smaller refinements with the clear aim of making certain actions easier.
Priced at $29.99, the upgrade adds plenty to make it worthwhile for most Mac users, but those who do not have Snow Leopard will need to pay for that upgrade as well. Lion can only be downloaded via the Mac App Store, which was introduced with Snow Leopard. In Mac OS X Lion, Apple has rethought the concept of scrolling through pages by making the idea of the scroll bar mostly obsolete. Now you can swipe with two fingers to scroll through a Web page or document, but the document moves as though you are actually moving it with your hand.
This is different from former scrolling methods, where you would scroll downward with the scroll bar to make a Web page move upward, for example. This might take some getting used to for many people, but we found it very intuitive once we got used to “grabbing” a Web page or scrollable document and moving it. The scroll bar is not completely a thing of the past, however, because it still shows up to indicate where you are on a page and disappears once you’re done scrolling–it’s just that you will mostly no longer need to use it. Some of the more-useful gestures we found were the aforementioned two-finger scrolling, a three-finger swipe upward to open Mission Control (more on this later), and the three-finger swipe to the side to switch between full-screen applications. All of these gestures are very fluid and intuitive and–once you remember the important ones–should become second nature. Full-screen apps: One of the more obvious differences between the Windows and Mac operating systems throughout the years was Windows’ ability to easily switch (or maximize) to full screen, while Mac apps would always launch (and remain) in a window.
With Mac OS X Lion, you’re now able to switch the core Mac apps to a full-screen view using a diagonal arrow icon in the top right of the app window. Apple’s Mac software that’s separate from the operating system, like iWork and the iLife apps, now have this functionality as well, but you’ll need to update them through the Mac App Store to add full-screen capabilities. Apple says that full screen will be available as an API to third-party developers as well, so expect many of your favorite apps to soon be updated with full-screen support.
I have a 128 HD SSD with mavericks running fine. And i want to install another hard drive more big than this. So i bought the licence, i want to do it with the 'official' process. But i waste a lot of time in 'unofficial' blogs. You're already running Mavericks, which we would presume means you also already purchased it through your App Store ID (despite being free, you still have to 'purchase' your own copy of Mavericks under your account). So why did you bother purchasing Mountain Lion?
You didn't need it. A blog is where one individual gives their opinion on various, or a confined number of topics. This is a user to user help forum where many very knowledgable people give their personal time for free to help others. If that's not acceptable, please let us know so we can spend our time helping someone who appreciates the effort. All you need to do is clone your current install of Mavericks to the new drive. You can use Disk Utility to do that, or the either of two highly respected third party apps; SuperDuper!, or Carbon Copy Cloner.
Well, not quite that simple. All new drives come with the partition map as Master Boot Record (Windows) and formatted as either FAT32 or NTFS (also Windows). So you need to first completely repartition the new drive with a GUID partition map and formatted as Mac OS Extended. Use Disk Utility to do that.
Jul 15, 2014 12:23 PM. I bougth this licence maybe by error, because in my understanding, Mavericks is for free, but you have to have the previous version running. I tried to do this, using Disk Utility, RESTORECurrent drive TO New Drive.
Was not work, error was something about 'you cant restore your current system running' and other thing is i prefer to have a fresh installation if i have a new hard drive, or is damaged, what is the oficial process to setup a Fresh installation of Mavericks? If i need to order media, download iso files, prepare a USB for boot, i will do it.i just need to have the process. Im running out of space in the hard drive, because i have VMWare fusion and is taking all my drive.
Thanks for your help. Jul 15, 2014 9:15 PM. I bougth this licence maybe by error, because in my understanding, Mavericks is for free, but you have to have the previous version running. That is true, but there should have already been something on the Mac. Any version of OS X which is Snow Leopard (10.6.x) or newer can be upgraded to Mavericks without having to purchase and install anything in between.
So for example, you can go right from SL to Mavericks without having to install Mountain Lion first. Mavericks is legal for you to install on as many Macs as you own in your own household. If i have a new hard drive, or is damaged, what is the oficial process to setup a Fresh installation of Mavericks? First and foremost is preparing the drive for the Mac. As mentioned above, all new drives are setup for Windows. Covered with your next question: if i need to order media, download iso files, prepare a USB for boot, i will do it.i just need to have the process. There is no media you can order, but you can make your own.
Purchase an 8 GB flash drive. Download Have your downloaded copy of Mavericks on any drive that is mounted. If you installed Mavericks as soon as it was downloaded, then it was deleted at the end of the process and you'll have to retrieve it again. Go into your App Store account under the Purchased tab and click Download for Mavericks. When the entire file has been downloaded to your Mac, it will want to install.
Press Command+Q to stop it. The file 'Install OS X Mavericks' will be in the Applications folder. Run DiskMaker X and it will create a bootable, full installer for Mavericks onto the flash drive. You can delete the downloaded file if you want, or copy it to an external drive so you don't have to retrieve a 5.2 GB file again in the future.
This all presumes you have enough space on your current SSD for a 5.2 GB download and enough free working space after that. Bare minimum 5 GB free space. 10 would be preferable. Once the flash drive has been created, put your new SSD in your Mac.
You don't mention what model you have, so I have no idea how easy or difficult this may be. Put the flash drive in a USB port and turn on the Mac. Immediately hold down the Option key. When you get the screen to choose a startup disk, click on the flash drive and continue. From the minimal work screen that appears, click Disk Utility. Choose the physical drive name at the left of your new SSD drive. Click Partition at the right.
Where the drop down says 'Current', change it to however many partitions you want. If you only want one partition (the entire drive), choose 1 Partition anyway. You must do this to unlock the Options button at the bottom.
Click Options and choose the radio button for GUID. GUID is necessary for the drive to be bootable. The format should already be Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Your drive is now ready for installing OS X. Billion 7800nl firmware download. Exit Disk Utility and click the option to install OS X. Jul 16, 2014 6:34 AM.
