Same issue, mine has x86, vista home premium 32 bit. Tried windows update, it fails @ 3-3 100%. Stand alone, fails also @ 3-3 100%.
Found out about the system readiness tool, downloaded and tried to install, but i canceled because the last quarter of the install bar did not move for half an hour (after waiting for it to get to that point 45 minutes before that). Tried installing again, install bar did not show any movement whatsoever (no green bar at all), canceled that one, but had to open up task manager because it wasn't responding. When i checked recent update history, it says it was successful the second time around, even though i ended the program.
Tried installing SP2 after i saw that, and still the same. (fails @ 3-3, 100%) just wondering, if i am up to date on all the updates since sp1 (i update every time i turn my pc on), is it safe to wait until the issue is resolved, or will i have some sort of catastrophic failure if SP2 is not installed right away? And if this issue is resolved in the coming days, will a hotfix be available through windows update to fix this issue with SP2 failed instalation? HI I also have been going through the EFail (0X80004005) error.
I have removed all my external devices. I have removed my secondary internal drive. I removed Acronis which I have never applied any use of yet.
I have disabled all non Microsoft Services. I have shut off my Spybot and Avast.
I have tried safe mode. I have never cloned my drive or have any secondary booting programs. The one mistake I made was being in the Sp2 Beta and it screwed up my computer and MS had to have me change several thing to get back to Sp1. But all my updates and programs are working. SO WHAT THE HECK IS WRONG???????
I AM WEARING OUT MY DRIVE TRYING TO GET THIS TO LOAD. Thanks for letting me vent. Gishmonster HI Again I do have a trouble ticket in to MS.
So far nothing good. I was instructed after the other stuff she had me try failed, to do a Inplace Upgrade. It failed to let me complete due to the Upgrade choice being Ghosted out. Her response was that it failed to let me Upgrade because my original disk did not have SP2. So she sent me a Upgrade disk that should fix the Ghosted out Upgrade choice.
After waiting 1 1/2 weeks I got the disk today and it does the same as trying it from my computer. It looks to me like I would have to select a higher priced version for the Upgrade to let me choose it. It sure seems to me that MS would have saved itself a lot of money and us a lot of wasted time if it would have just sent every Vista user a Windows 7 disk.
Back on waiting for MS to respond. Gishmonster I think I have found a quicker way to see if Sp2 is going to install. Put in youR Vista DVD and let it load from start. Wait - the blue screen takes a while to finish then the Language choice appears - click Next Select Repair your computer. Wait for the hour glass to go away - click Next Startup Repair. My computer would not do this Repair.
All of the Test completed sucessfully with 0X0 and the Operating system booted sucessfully. 'You have recently attached a device to this computer such as a camera or portable music player, remove it and restart your computer. If you continue to see this message contact your system admin or computer manufacture.' The problem is before I did this I went into Device manager and using a selection method from Tech Republic to show all drivers even unused, I had removed every driver out of the Drive devices except for my C drive.
SO WHY THE HECK IS IT TELLING ME I HAVE A DEVICE IN THERE. THIS SHOWS THAT THIS Sp2 UPDATE IS VERY FLAWED. MICROSOFT NEEDS TO DO SOMETHING ABOUT THIS STILL WAITING FOR A REPLY FROM MY TROUBLE REPORT. Hi Again Got a response from MS. She had me do a Diskchk and a sfc /scannow which did not fix the problem.
She had me send a msinfo32 file. The response now is that my system files are bad and I have to do a clean install. She had me backup my system. OOPS - the Backup program errors on the last step before running and will not do a backup:( I saw a program called Windows Easy Transfer on the Backup screen so I tried that. It completed and looked a lot like the XP backup I used to do. Can anybody tell me if this is going to reinstall all my programs after the clean install??? Any other help before I do the Clean insatll would be appreciated.
I am going to wait a couple of days. On the side - I had a girl bring me her laptop to see if I could help it run better.
It needed a lot of updates. I finally got to the Vista SP2. I down loaded it and it went right in and finished up on the windows screen. That was last week now she says it is telling her the Sp2 did not install and is bringing it back for me to look. SP@#&QQ&Q&Q%&(Q&%$(.Q Have a wonderful day. Hi Again I looked up the Easy Transfere. It is only good for file and folders not programs.
Also I found that Vista Home Premium is not so Premium. The reason I cannot use Backup is - Home Premium does not have the Backup feature. Exactly what does Premium have. What does Premium stand for.
What good is Vista period. GIVE ME GOOD OLD XP ANY DAY VISTA IS )@$(#%Q)%&@(#.(.& Had my fill of Vista. Cia terminal login screen. Hi Again Well I still have not had any luck and nobody seems to be posting anything new to this Forum Question. I did find that MS has compounded the trouble with this. If you have Vista Premium and want to try and Use MS Upgrade Anytime to get Vista Ultimate so you can backup your Programs you may have a problem. Office password recovery utility. On the early information page it says you need Sp1 in order to upgrade but when you work your way to the Payment page the information says they will ship you a disk and you have to have Sp2 installed to use it.
Lets see I cannot get Sp2 installed and I want to upgrade so I do not have to reload everything after my clean install but I can not because they made the requirment you have to have Sp2 installed. WAY TO GO MS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GISHMONSTER I give up. I am going to do a clean install today.
Hope the rest of you have better luck than I did with this Vista fiasco. MICROSOFT NEEDS TO GIVE EVERYONE A FREE UPGRADE TO W7. PEOPLE NEED TO RAISE THIS ISSUE MORE. A COMPANY SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO TREAT ITS CUSTOMERS LIKE THIS. Thanks for the help.
Microsoft, Do Clarify on release/Installation notes that SP2 delves into previous vista sp1 boot configuration by looking at the current active or boot partition. If the system happens to be a multiOS machine it is very likely the current active partition will be a different one respect the partition in which%windows% is located. Personally, I have: 3 NTFS partitions (A primary for VistaSP1, an extended with 2 more partitions for Documents and Settings and Program Files, so they are separated (some registry editing was necessary the first time Vista was installed)) 1 ZFS Partition with Solaris 10 (Primary, the one it actually was as Active) 1 ext3 Partition with SUSE 11 (Logical within the extended partition) 1 Linux swap Grub on the MBR with the vista MBR signature untouched so vista can boot up. I had to set as boot partition (Active) the Windows Vista partition (Gparted), disable ZoneAlarm and then it went Ok (I had installed also the KB947821 vista sp2 readiness pack) When I had Solaris Active, it went to 100% Step 3 of 3 and then it went back; Taking a look to the /Windows/Logs/CBS/CBS.log the only complain was a failure to perform some registry changes (only SPI Error). Since There is a full Microsoft Article about Error code 0x80004005 that has as one of the solutions a full clean reinstall of the OS, I was hoping that for this (very likely) scenario of having several OSs a guide can be made (or a comment can be added to the general guidelines), referring to the Active/boot flag step, as users can be mis-leaded into a full clean install quite easily.
I'm another victim of this annoying bug. I've got a Dell XPS600 desktop with a full (non-Dell) retail copy of Vista Ultimate 32-bit running a RAID 0 array with only one partition.approx 400Gb free disk and 2Gb RAM nVIDIA 9800GTX+ video, Creative SoundBlaster XFi Extreme Music audio. I also get the EFAIL error and an installation fail of SP2 at 100% of stage 3. Now, here's the weird stuff: After the first SP2 installation failure, (which by the way failed with a different error code: this one was NOT ENOUGH STORAGE IS AVAILABLE TO COMPLETE THIS OPERATION ERROROUTOFMEMORY(0x8007000e)) I ran system readiness tool.it took almost two hours to run then completed. I tried to install SP2 again and this time it went to 92% completed Stage 3, then gave me a login prompt and gave me a useable desktop. When I checked in system properties it reported SP2.
I went to reboot and it gave me the 'Configuring Updates' screen then said Service Pack did not install reverting changes. Incredibly frustrating. I tried again with System Readiness Tool and it again ran to completion, although it took almost two hours to do so. Ran SP2 again failed at 100% Stage 3 with the EFAIL error. I have CBS logs available, but until there is a resolution for this, I'm staying at SP1. My system is stable and I'm not in the mood to do a reinstallation of the OS.
Update 07/07: SP2 install successful!!! The resolution: The language packs (Vista Ultimate) were blocking SP2 install. I tried to uninstall them, but Windows would not let me: After a long time processing all languages, it said none of the LP could be uninstalled. That was on a clean boot machine, with all startup and non-MS services disabled in msconfig, machine rebooted, Task Manager checked for any user or system suspicious task.
![]()
I ran KB947506, this unblocked partially the LP uninstall. I could not uninstall 2 or more simultaneously, but I could uninstall the LPs one by one. That worked even with all the antivirus and other startup and non-MS services enabled. So I did just that and rebooted after every 10 LP uninstalled or so, until all LPs were removed. SP2 then installed without any error.
Hope this helps! I have 2 systems to upgrade to SP1.
On both I briefly had SP1 beta installed before I found out it could easily lose its ability to uninstall, so I uninstalled both. On a desktop, which I had to re-install Win 7 over a Twain driver issue, the SP1 as supplied by Windows Update did a seamless install. However, on a laptop which I had uninstalled some time in the middle of Oct 2010, I get the continual 'Error: EFail(0x80004005)' on Win 7 SP1 update attempts.
I downloaded the 300meg patch that updates all the installed updates with the same result. One of the only options at MS was to re-install Windows 7, which of course means re-installing ALL apps.
If this is the solution, I am very disappointed in MS. I would hope they find a way to totally clean ALL traces of the very old installation, which successfully uninstalled in Oct 2010. I only recalled it was on the laptop because when doing a search in the guts of Windows, I found about 4 leftover files or references thereto, which would not delete. I had enabled Administrator to do the install tries after the 1st or 2nd failure; what is depressing is that it does the entire install, including 100% of the reboot phase; then it says it failed - when it should be normal login time!!!! As I said, someone should be able to build a beta TOTAL cleanup app to allow a TOTALLY successful installation of SP1.
The reinstall Windows 7 seems to me to be an unacceptable option. I am checking the Has Code, if that means 'Error: EFail(0x80004005).' Thanks for any successful solution!
This is a Vista and SP2 thread, not Windows 7 SP1. Nevertheless, you can probably fix your problem in 2 ways: 1) Perform an 'in-place upgrade'.
Basically, reinstall Windows 7 on top of Windows 7 using the original Windows 7 DVD-R, selecting the Upgrade option, not new installation. This will restore the missing files and allow you to proceed with the SP1 installation, while preserving all your applications and user settings and files. 2) Identify which files are missing, for instance using the Windows Readiness Tool and the cbs.log file, and expand and restore them from the original Windows DVD-R to the expected locations. I attempted to follow the directions above for my Win 7 SP1 installation; although I started with option 2 first. However, I am unclear on what the file name is on my original DVD Win 7 x64 disk; and when I downloaded the the product for the x64 version, I am unclear on where to find the executable/cbs.log file.
Please help me with this. What I've found seems to point to.NET files missing and/or damaged; Registry entries missing and/or damaged - although neither is real clear to me. Thank you in advance.
Editors' rating The good: Windows Vista Ultimate does improve some features within Windows XP; fewer system crashes than Windows XP; offers better built-in support options. The bad: Windows Vista Ultimate does not put Search on the desktop (it's buried within applications, within the Start Menu); optimized only for the Microsoft Windows ecosystem (for example, RSS feeds from Internet Explorer 7 get preferential treatment); there's simply too much and not all of it is implemented properly; no new software yet written exclusively for Windows Vista; and there are too many editions of Windows Vista.
The bottom line: Windows Vista is essentially warmed-over Windows XP. If you're currently happy with Windows XP SP2, we see no compelling reason to upgrade. With the wrapped up and offered for download as standalone releases as well as updates through Windows Update, Microsoft is offering customers worldwide the option to install multiple languages for the platform, and seamlessly switch between them. The end of June brought with it the release of the remaining versions of Windows Vista Service Pack 2. With the latest wave of Vista SP2 RTM downloads Microsoft has managed to deliver the second service pack for the precursor of Windows 7 in the localized versions for all supported languages of the operating system. As of June 30, 2009, Vista SP1 users around the world are able to download, install and run the SP2 in their native language. But at the same time, the Redmond company has made available for download the Windows Vista SP2 RTM Multilingual User Interface (MUI) Language Packs. As was the case for Vista SP1, no less than 34 languages are supported by the MUI Language Packs.
And just as it was the case with previous releases of the packs, as well as the similar bits for Windows 7, the Vista SP2 RTM MUI Language Packs are designed to integrate exclusively with the high-end edition of the operating system. Only Vista SP2 Ultimate users, as well as companies running the Ultimate equivalent, namely Enterprise, will be able to take advantage of the SP2 RTM MUI Language Packs. Microsoft has released both the 32-bit and the 64-bit flavors of the Vista SP2 RTM MUI Language Packs on Windows Update for the following languages: Arabic, Bulgarian, Chinese (simplified), Chinese (Traditional), Croatian, Czech, Danish, Dutch, English, Estonian, Finnish, French, German, Greek, Hebrew, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Latvian, Lithuanian, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Portuguese (Portugal), Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Slovak, Slovenian, Spanish, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, and Ukrainian. On a Dell Precision M90 notebook with Windows Vista Ultimate x64 and BitLocker enabled, I installed SP1 RC through Windows Update. At the end of stage 2 or 3, the system rebooted in to a text mode screen and displayed filenames (with a counter from 1 to about 127,000), then the screen went black and remained so for at least an hour, while there was still hard disk activity, like it was re-encrypting the drive or something like that. I let it finish, then the system rebooted and displayed this: Windows Bitlocker Drive Encryption Information The system boot information has changed since BitLocker was enabled. You must supply a BitLocker recovery password to start this system. Confirm that the changes to the system boot information are authorized.

If the changes to the sytem boot information are trusted, then disable and re-enable BitLocker. This will reset BitLocker to use the new boot information. Otherwise restore the system boot information. ENTER=Continue When pressing Enter the follow screen appears: Windows Boot Manager Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem: 1.
Insert your Windows installation disc and restart your computer. Choose your language settings, and then click 'Next'. Click 'Repair your computer.' If you do not have this disc, contact your system administrator or computer manufacturer for assistence. File: Windows system32 winload.exe Status: 0xc0210000 Info: The action could not be completed because the BitLocker Driver Encryption key required to unlock the volume could not be obtained.
The problem however is that I'm not prompted to enter the BitLocker recovery password, after press Enter I'm returned to the first screen. I then tried steps 1-3 to try to fix the problem, and then used 'Startup Repair'. This caused a third screen to appear after boot: Choose an operating system to start, or press TAB to select a tool: (Use the arrows keys to highlight your choice, then press ENTER.) Microsoft Windows Vista To specify an advanced option for this choice, press F8. Tools: Windows Memory Diagnostic Enter=Choose TAB=Menu Esc=Cancel However, after pressing Enter, I go back to the first screen, and still no way to enter the recovery password. In the System Recovery Options screen one operating system is shown: Microsoft Windows Vista, with Parition Size 0 MB and Location ( E: ) Local Disk, which is normally my C: drive. When I start a Command Prompt in WinRE and try to go to E: I get 'This volume is locked by BitLocker Drive Encryption. Return to the control panel to unlock volume.' When I try to do things with 'manage-bde' in a Command Prompt, I'm only getting 'ERROR: An error occurred while connecting to the BitLocker management interface, so I cannot decrypt the drive.
I was under the impression that WinRE was BitLocker aware, but apparently it is not? I would be happy if I can just access my files and copy them to another drive, or something like that, but there is just no way to enter the BitLocker recovery password, and I see no way to recover my system other than trying to connect the hard disk to another PC running Windows Vista, and hope that will able to access the drive.
I wish I had disabled BitLocker before attempting the installation, I assumed this wouldn't be necessary because one of the prerequisites was specically to prevent BitLocker-issues during installation of SP1. I found this 'Windows Update Experience for RC Public Availability' to be a very disappointing experience, considering that this is a public Release Candidate. If hope this isn't an indication of what the final SP1 will be, or it will be a disaster!
